At We Are Salon, we’ve always believed that what we do goes beyond great hair. It’s about people, community, and the responsibility we have to the world around us. That’s why partnering with the Green Salon Collective felt like a natural next step for us.
Sustainability in the hair industry hasn’t always been straightforward. From foils and colour waste to hair clippings and excess product, salons generate more waste than most people realise. For a long time, much of that has gone straight to landfill. We knew we wanted to change that.
What This Means in Practice
Through our partnership with the Green Salon Collective, we are now able to recover and repurpose up to 95% of our salon waste. That includes:
- Hair clippings – used to create hair booms that help clean oil spills from oceans
- Used foils, colour tubes, and metals – recycled and reprocessed
- Excess colour – safely captured and kept out of waterways
- Plastics – sorted and redirected away from landfill
It’s a smarter, more responsible way of working—without compromising on the creativity and quality our clients expect from us.
The £1 Green Fee
To make this possible, we’ve introduced a small £1 green fee to each appointment.
We know conversations around price matter, and transparency is important to us. This fee goes directly towards the specialist recycling and recovery processes that the Green Salon Collective provides. It allows us to operate more sustainably without cutting corners elsewhere.
In simple terms: it helps us do better.
Why It Matters to Us
Inclusivity and care sit at the heart of everything we do—whether that’s creating a welcoming space for every client who walks through our doors or giving back through our community work. Extending that mindset to the environment felt like an essential evolution.
We don’t claim to be perfect, but we are committed to progress. This partnership is one step (of many) towards reducing our impact and being more conscious in how we operate as a business.

This is just the beginning. As we continue to grow, we’re committed to finding new ways to improve—whether that’s through the products we use, the education we invest in, or the partnerships we build.
